The Value of Indoor/Outdoor Connections

One of the most important ideas that has been reinforced in the past two or three years is the importance of connecting the inside spaces we develop with the outdoors. In our designs, we create these connections with intention, since we know the real value of private and semi-private open spaces. These spaces are not inexpensive to build, so we know we’d better do it right.

It can be as simple as being sure to design a deck for each apartment in a building. We recess a portion of the deck into the building to create privacy, but a portion extends beyond the building so it’s not too dark and feels connected to the outside. The materials on either side and above it are rich and textured. And finally, the deck railings are made of frosted glass, letting in light, yet creating privacy for the deck itself and blurring views to the inside of the unit.

When we design communal decks for apartment or office project, we explore whether it should be shaded or open to the sun, or both. Plant selection and waterproofing are also critical to the long-term success of these spaces. With stunning views and refined finishes, we have tenants who have leased a space simply because of the quality of our outdoor spaces.

Plazas and courtyards are also a very specialized part of our business. When they are designed well, they blend into a project and often go unnoticed by the casual observer, but a courtyard also serves many functions. It’s often a secondary access to a building and provides a transition from the street. Courtyards and plazas are “living rooms” for a building and allow for socialization and connection. Finally, they are an eddy in the stream: a place to relax outdoors and have lunch with a friend or informal meeting away from the street. For rejuvenation and inspiration, these spaces are important.
